I recently treated myself to something I’ve wanted for years a luxury watch. It’s more than just an expensive item; it represents a personal achievement and months of saving and hard work. When I finally got it, I felt proud, like I’d reached a milestone I’d been striving toward for a long time.
But when my sister (32F) found out about the watch, she immediately asked if she could borrow it for a “special event.” I said no. It’s brand new, something I worked hard for, and frankly, it’s mine. I didn’t think my refusal would lead to anything bigger, but she took it personally.
She accused me of being selfish and claimed that since I could afford another one, it wouldn’t matter if something happened to this one. I tried to explain that it’s not just about the money the watch holds significant personal value to me. She wouldn’t let it go, saying I’m prioritizing material things over family and that if I truly cared about her, I’d share it. She even pointed out that she doesn’t have the same opportunities to buy something like this, which made her feel I was being inconsiderate.
I told her I’m happy to help her out in other ways, but the watch is non-negotiable. That wasn’t enough. Now my parents are involved, calling me names and making me feel like I’m the bad guy for setting this boundary.
It’s frustrating because I don’t feel like I’m asking for much just to keep something that I bought for myself. Am I really wrong for holding onto something so meaningful, or is this a case of misplaced entitlement?
