The writer, a 26-year-old mom, has been with her boyfriend for a year and a half, blending their lives with their four children from previous relationships. While they are committed to building a future together, his mother has been a constant source of tension. From the very beginning, she has inserted herself into their relationship, creating conflict and making it clear she doesn’t approve of the writer or her children.
When her boyfriend was going through a custody battle with his children’s mother, his mom initially seemed supportive. She would text the writer constantly, complaining about the baby mom and sharing all the awful things she believed the woman had done to her son. She even went as far as blocking the baby mom on her phone and social media. But once the custody hearing granted her boyfriend 50/50 custody, his mother’s behavior changed drastically. Suddenly, she began sharing old photos of her son with the baby mom and their children, calling them her “family.” Things escalated further when she invited the baby mom to a camping trip that was supposed to be the writer and her boyfriend’s first big outing together with the kids. When the writer declined to attend because of the obvious tension, his mother uninvited her, her kids, and even her boyfriend from the trip—and still took his kids along with the baby mom. To make matters worse, she blocked their numbers in anger.
Though she eventually apologized, it was a weak acknowledgment: “I’m sorry I can be a lot to handle sometimes,” with no real accountability for her actions.
The situation worsened when the writer and her boyfriend experienced a devastating pregnancy loss. At their lowest point, the boyfriend decided they needed space and texted his mother to ask if he and his kids could stay with her temporarily. She assumed the writer had kicked him out (despite her begging him to stay) and used the moment to lash out. She declared she was “done” with the writer and told her son never to ask her to accept his girlfriend again. When the writer tried to stand up for herself, explaining how hurtful it was to be treated this way during such a vulnerable time, her mother-in-law blocked her once again.
This holiday season brought even more tension. The writer and her children weren’t welcome at her mother-in-law’s house. His children spent Christmas Day with their mom, and his grandmother invited them to visit on a different day. However, his mother allowed the baby mom to visit with the kids to open presents, creating even more awkwardness. She then texted her son, accusing him of upsetting his grandmother. The writer feels the root of this conflict is her mother-in-law’s refusal to accept boundaries and her inability to embrace her son’s relationship.
Despite everything, her boyfriend has stood by her and insists he doesn’t want to leave. The writer, overwhelmed by the constant drama, has even suggested he leave her to find peace, but he refuses. It’s a painful and exhausting situation, but the love and commitment between her and her boyfriend remain strong, even in the face of so much opposition.
