AITAH for telling my wife we are not going to move just because my ex bought a house near where we lived

When my wife and I bought our home two years ago it was the culmination of years of hard work and planning. Nestled in a peaceful community the house was everything we had hoped for and we couldn’t have been happier with the choice. Life here had been serene until last week when an unexpected encounter turned everything upside down.

During an evening walk through the neighborhood park we ran into someone from my past my ex. It had been years since we’d spoken let alone seen each other. For context my ex and I dated throughout high school and college almost nine years in total.

We were once deeply in love and even talked about marriage but ultimately we both got cold feet and ended things. The breakup was devastating for me but through time and therapy I moved on and built a new life.

The encounter was brief but cordial. My ex told me she had recently purchased a home in the same community with help from her parents. She seemed genuinely surprised to see me and after a polite chat where she was also friendly toward my wife we parted ways. I didn’t think much of it until we got home where my wife completely spiraled.

She was adamant that my ex’s decision to move into our community was intentional insisting it wasn’t a coincidence. She claimed my ex was “furiously blushing” during the conversation and suggested that there must be some ulterior motive. Despite my reassurances that it was nothing more than a chance encounter my wife’s anxiety only grew.

The next day she proposed something shocking moving out of our home entirely. She said she didn’t feel comfortable knowing my ex lived nearby and wanted us to start fresh elsewhere. I told her outright that I couldn’t agree.

We had put too much time energy and money into making this house our home. Moving over an unfounded assumption seemed irrational to me. I reminded her that I’d long since moved on from my past relationship and asked her to trust me.

My wife however feels that my refusal to consider moving means I’m not prioritizing her feelings. I feel caught in an impossible position. I can’t control where someone else chooses to live nor do I think my ex’s presence warrants uprooting the life we’ve built.

Now my wife is upset and I’m questioning whether I’m being dismissive of her feelings or simply standing firm on something that shouldn’t be an issue. Did I handle this wrong?
