letting my friend drive my car after saying no, and now she’s blaming me for the damage?

The other day I went to pick up my friend since her car has been out of commission for a while. It’s something I’ve done before without issue but this time as soon as she saw my car she started asking if she could drive. I immediately said no.

I don’t usually let people drive my car not because it’s super fancy but because I’ve put a lot of effort into keeping it in good condition and I prefer being the one behind the wheel.

She didn’t take no for an answer and kept pushing. At first it was jokes about how she “needed the practice” and missed driving. Then she started saying she was a “better driver” than I am and would treat the car better than I ever could.

I held firm for a while but eventually I gave in because I didn’t want to argue. She promised she’d be careful and I thought “It’s just a quick drive what could go wrong?”

Turns out a lot. While backing out of her driveway she scraped the back of my car against a brick mailbox. She didn’t even realize it until I pointed it out. Instead of apologizing she immediately started blaming me saying I “made her nervous” by sitting there quietly and not helping her guide the car.

I was stunned. I didn’t say a single word while she was reversing. She kept doubling down saying it was my fault for letting her drive in the first place claiming I should’ve “stuck to my no” if I cared so much about the car. Now my bumper is scratched and she’s flat-out refusing to contribute to the repair costs because she insists I’m the one who let it happen.

I regret giving in but at the end of the day she’s the one who damaged the car. Yet somehow she’s acting like I’m the bad guy here. It feels unfair for her to put all the blame on me especially when she was the one insisting on driving.
